Biography
Keller Williams operates as an entire jam ensemble on his own, serving as singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His engaging stage appearances place him alone before audiences alongside a Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro looping unit, where he constructs and layers supporting loops spontaneously while delivering simultaneous improvisations on a custom-built ten-string guitar. The distinctive, lighthearted, and playfully surreal compositions he frequently threads into lengthy, partially spontaneous medleys, combined with his affable and approachable tenor delivery, establish Williams as a singular talent whose stylistic quirks never hinder immediate listener connection.
Born in Virginia, Williams obtained his initial guitar at age three, though he acknowledges that serious study did not begin until his early teenage years. He completed secondary education in Fredericksburg and launched solo performances at age 17. Roughly a year afterward he encountered the innovative guitar work of Michael Hedges, whose approach has remained a permanent influence on Williams’ own technique. After enrolling at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach between 1988 and 1991, where he pursued a theater degree, and sustaining regular local appearances, he issued his first independent recording, Freek, in 1994.
Williams moved to Colorado the next year and there encountered the progressive bluegrass ensemble String Cheese Incident at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. He subsequently opened for the group on tour dates throughout 1997 and 1998. His follow-up solo effort, Buzz, arrived in 1996. Eventually he joined the roster of String Cheese Incident’s SCI Fidelity imprint and delivered Spun in 1998. Maintaining an extraordinary release pace, Williams has issued roughly one album annually thereafter on the label, each bearing a single-word title: Breathe in 1999, Loop in 2001, Laugh in 2002, Dance and Home in 2003, Stage in 2004, and the DVD Sight in 2005. Grass, credited to Keller & the Keels, surfaced in 2006, followed by Dream in 2007. December 2007 brought his twelfth collection, the aptly named compilation 12. Odd appeared in 2009; Thief, again with the Keels, and Kids, his initial official children’s project, both followed in 2010. Bass arrived in 2011 and Pick, a collaboration with the Travelin’ McCourys, in 2012. Williams joined Yonder Mountain String Band’s Jeff Austin and String Cheese Incident’s Keith Moseley for Dos in 2014. In 2017 he released the acoustic set Raw along with Sync, which introduced Keller Williams’ KWahtro featuring upright bassist Danton Boller, drummer Rodney Holmes, and guitarist Gibb Droll. Continuously inventive, forward-thinking, and entertaining, Williams remains a compelling figure whose distinctive worldview and remarkable guitar abilities provide a distinctive listening experience.
