Kevin Abstract, recognized primarily for co-founding the rap collective Brockhampton, crafts dreamy and introspective tracks as a Texas-based rapper and singer/songwriter that merge hip-hop with pop, R&B, and alternative rock. His words explore depression, relationships, drug use, and feelings of social alienation shaped by multiple relocations throughout his life and his decision to come out. Beyond Brockhampton contributions, he has issued solo material such as the debut MTV1987 (2014), the Billboard-charting Arizona Baby (2019), and later singles including “Slugger” and “Sierra Nights” (both 2021), along with the energetic “Blanket” and the more contemplative “What Should I Do?” (both 2023).

Clifford Ian Simpson entered the world in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1996 and drew early inspiration from Nirvana, Will Smith in his dual roles as rapper and actor, Kanye West, and additional artists. While still a high school student he began creating music, initiated mixtape releases in 2009, and launched the collective AliveSinceForever in 2011. After solo and group EPs appeared, his first full-length MTV1987 surfaced in 2014 near his eighteenth birthday. Romil Hemnani served as primary producer on the project, which drew directly from Abstract’s personal experiences and earned praise that placed it on year-end lists compiled by Spin and Pigeons & Planes. AliveSinceForever dissolved before regrouping under the name Brockhampton with a revised roster that started dropping singles in 2015; their opening mixtape All-American Trash arrived in March 2016 and featured tracks by Abstract alongside Ameer Vann, Rodney Tenor, Dom McLennon, and additional members.

Abstract joined the Neighbourhood for shows across England and the United States, then issued his sophomore album American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story toward year’s end. That record contained material developed with Michael Uzowuru (known for work with Frank Ocean and Vince Staples), Om’Mas Keith, Jeff Kleinman, and further collaborators, after which Abstract mounted a headline American tour in support.

Attention returned to Brockhampton in 2017, yielding the widely praised Saturation trilogy—Saturation, Saturation II, and Saturation III—whose successive chart climbs culminated in the number-one debut of the fourth album Iridescence in 2018. Once the group achieved mainstream visibility, Abstract redirected energy toward solo output in 2019. Following the single “Big Wheels,” he presented the opening segment of Arizona Baby, with the continuation Ghetto Baby appearing the next week; the complete album received an official release at the close of April and reached number 53 on the Billboard 200. Production credits on the set included Jack Antonoff and Brockhampton associate Hemnani. Throughout the opening months of 2021 Abstract previewed several solo tracks, releasing “Slugger,” a collaboration with $NOT and slowthai, and “Sierra Nights,” featuring Ryan Beatty, later that year. He also contributed guest verses, among them an appearance on Easy Life’s “Dear Miss Holiday,” before returning in 2023 with “Blanket” and “What Should I Do?”
