Biography
In 2007 Kevin Michael entered the scene through a debut album released under his own name, an effort steeped in classic R&B traditions yet infused with forward-leaning pop touches that kept it from achieving broad crossover appeal or fitting neatly into neo-soul, notwithstanding major-label backing and prominent featured guests. From that point forward the boldly inventive vocalist and songwriter sustained an independent path marked by intermittent releases and outside collaborations, among them the 2019 project The Quiet Cool.
Raised in Chester, Pennsylvania, situated between Philadelphia and Wilmington, Kevin Michael Seward displayed strong musical ambitions already at age 11. A self-taught vocalist, he began composing songs during his mid-teens and committed fully to music once high school ended. An approximately twelve-month association with Virgin failed to yield results, yet when the label’s senior VP of A&R Josh Deutsch departed to launch Downtown Records, the artist followed. Via Downtown’s partnership with Atlantic, Seward issued his first recording as Kevin Michael in 2007. Crafted alongside numerous contributors such as Andrew Wyatt, the Clutch, and Bloodshy & Avant, and featuring appearances by Q-Tip, Wyclef Jean, and Lupe Fiasco, the album appeared on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. By this stage Michael, whose voice evoked a youthful Rahsaan Patterson, had also accumulated live experience supporting Maroon 5 and Lily Allen. Further progress arrived over the ensuing couple of years as he opened for John Legend and portrayed a wedding singer in (500) Days of Summer.
Beyond the 2011 successor International, issued solely in Japan through Victor, Michael concentrated during the following decade on a series of self-released works. Momentum increased in the latter portion of the 2010s through partnerships with Hudson Mohawke on “Warriors” and Luke James on “These Arms,” culminating in the 2019 solo EP The Quiet Cool.
