Biography
Lady Lamb serves as the performing alias of New England singer/songwriter Aly Spaltro, whose work fuses indie rock, pop, and folk into an inventive and captivating whole. Early self-released recordings on a do-it-yourself basis opened the door to her first proper album, the 2013 release Ripely Pine, issued by Ba Da Bing Records. That lyrically rich and stylistically diverse debut drew widespread praise and cultivated a loyal following, setting the stage for the 2015 successor After. On 2019’s Even in the Tremor she adopted a more openly personal tone, then concentrated on standalone tracks for several subsequent years. To mark the tenth anniversary of her initial long-player, Spaltro issued the expansive 2023 box set In the Mammoth Nothing of the Night.
Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Spaltro moved with her family to Brunswick, Maine, while still in her early teens. An avid film lover, she frequented Bart & Greg’s DVD Explosion, a local video store. After finishing high school she spent a gap year employed there; once her shifts ended she was permitted by the owners to assemble makeshift recording gear on the premises, effectively converting the shop into a nocturnal workspace for songwriting and experimentation. Beginning in 2007 under the fuller moniker Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, she issued some of these home recordings, designing the covers herself and placing copies for sale at a nearby record shop. She relocated to Portland, Maine, the following year and gradually established a presence within the regional music community. By 2010 she had settled in New York City and accumulated additional self-produced material.
In Brooklyn she joined forces with producer Nadim Issa to track a formal debut at the Gowanus facility Let Em In Music. The resulting Ripely Pine gathered material spanning her formative years, including compositions written during adolescence. Ba Da Bing released the album, whose introspective lyrics, layered indie-rock textures, and emotionally charged folk elements resonated with both audiences and reviewers. As her first nationally available project it attracted strong notices and prompted extensive live dates across the United States, Europe, and the United Kingdom.
Capitalizing on that visibility, Spaltro signed with Mom + Pop Records and shortened her stage name for the follow-up. Working again with Issa, she delivered the 2015 album After, a dynamic collection that broadened her sonic range through the interplay of distorted rock and orchestral pop. The record reached the Billboard rock, independent, and Heatseekers charts. Late the next year she issued the intimate Tender Warriors Club EP. Returning to Ba Da Bing, she self-produced the reflective 2019 full-length Even in the Tremor.
Entering the new decade Spaltro continued issuing individual tracks, among them the reflective 2020 single “Arizona” and the driving “We’ve Got a Good Thing Going.” Two further one-off releases, “Ivy” and “Wolves of My Want,” surfaced in 2022. The following year marked a decade since Ripely Pine, prompting an ambitious anniversary box set built around the original album and extensive bonus material. In the Mammoth Nothing of the Night paired a newly remastered edition of the debut with early archival recordings and several songs newly tracked from the same creative period.
