Lawrence Arabia serves as the alias for James Milne, whose deep appreciation for enduring songcraft yields music shaped equally by 1970s West Coast Americana and the indie pop aesthetic associated with New Zealand’s Flying Nun Records. Milne entered the world in Christchurch, New Zealand, during 1981 and relocated to Auckland in 2002, promptly becoming a member of the indie pop group the Brunettes. In 2004 Ryan McPhun, another Brunettes participant, launched the Ruby Suns and enlisted Milne within its shifting roster. Milne handled bass for both ensembles, completed U.S. tours alongside the Brunettes, then returned home to assemble fellow musicians Jolyon Mulholland, Benjamin Luke Eldridge, and longtime acquaintance Ryan McPhun into the Reduction Agents.

Concurrently Milne’s Lawrence Arabia persona emerged. Balancing commitments to the Reduction Agents with his solo work, he issued the self-titled Lawrence Arabia debut in 2006. Its understated, idiosyncratic indie pop tracks garnered acclaim throughout New Zealand yet drew scant attention from Northern Hemisphere outlets. After settling in London’s fashionable Shoreditch district, Milne began composing material for a follow-up while supporting himself through road work with Okkervil River and Feist plus employment supplying expatriate New Zealanders with domestic products.

The resulting Chant Darling album took shape across sites that included Sweden and London before final assembly in New Zealand for a 2009 release. That September, Milne and co-writer Luke Buda received the APRA Silver Scroll Award for the track “Apple Pie Bed.” While touring during 2010 he continued developing songs intended for his third album and joined Liam Finn and Connan Mockasin in the trio Barb, which issued a self-titled record the same year. In October he entered a Surrey studio with Elroy Finn and Connan Mockasin to capture the new material; after additional overdubs in New Zealand throughout 2011, The Sparrow reached completion. Prior to its appearance Milne collaborated with Mike Fabulous on the Unlimited Buffett album, issued later that year under the Fabulous/Arabia name. Bella Union launched The Sparrow internationally in July 2012; the record earned widespread critical favor and secured the 2013 Tui Award for Best Male Solo Album in New Zealand. Milne’s subsequent release, Absolute Truth, arrived in 2016 after he and Mike Fabulous recorded it at a modest facility beyond Lower Hutt and placed it with the storied Flying Nun imprint.
