Liima, whose name means “glue” in Finnish, unites Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer, and Rasmus Stolberg—the three founding members of the Danish indie-electronic outfit Efterklang—with Finnish jazz percussionist Tatu Rönkkö. Although the quartet shares Efterklang’s taste for soaring vocals, samples, and understated electronic pulses, its music unfolds with greater spontaneity and room for improvisation. The project took shape in July 2014 after the Danish musicians received an invitation to appear at Our Festival in Finland; they quickly assembled fresh pieces for the occasion, found the open-ended process liberating, and kept playing together at clubs and festivals throughout Europe. In 2015 the group tracked its first album, ii, at a Berlin studio under producer Jonas Verwijnen, and 4AD released the record in March 2016. While supporting ii on the road, Liima tested new songs not only in conventional halls but also in hotel kitchens and at daytime school concerts in isolated northern Norwegian towns. Those pieces were later captured at a countryside facility in Finland and issued by City Slang as the band’s sophomore album, 1982.
