Biography
When Saints Go Machine emerged as an experimental Danish ensemble whose immersive aesthetic spans art-pop, electro-pop, house, ambient textures, and orchestral arrangements. Rising swiftly from Copenhagen’s underground electronic circuit during the late 2000s, the group established itself among the scene’s leading acts, particularly after issuing its second album, the 2011 release Konkylie, which drew widespread critical praise. Both that record and its 2013 successor, Infinity Pool, achieved Top Five status on the Danish charts. Following a six-year hiatus, the band resurfaced in 2019 with the ambitious So Deep, a project realized in partnership with the Copenhagen Philharmonic. Thereafter the group maintained a steady output, delivering a new album every two years and returning to the charts in 2023 with Rosy after an absence of ten years.
The quartet that formed in 2007 originally included vocalist Nikolaj Manuel Vonsild alongside keyboardists Jonas Kenton and Simon Muschinsky and drummer Silas Moldenhawer. Enveloping Vonsild’s singular vocal style—frequently likened to the work of Arthur Russell and Anohni—the collective’s wide-ranging approach integrated touches of Brian Eno, David Byrne, and Depeche Mode while incorporating an indie R&B sensibility reminiscent of How to Dress Well and Active Child. Their self-titled debut EP appeared in 2008, followed the next year by the full-length Ten Makes a Face. International recognition arrived with the second album, Konkylie, whose breakout singles “Kelly” and “Church and Law” helped secure a Steppeulven Award for Best Producer and a number-two peak on the Danish charts. Infinity Pool marked a turn toward a more streamlined, overtly electronic palette and still managed to reach number five nationally. A subsequent pause allowed members to pursue separate endeavors, including Kenton Slash Demon and Cancer.
Reconvening in 2018 without Muschinsky, the remaining trio explored fresh sonic territory. Their fourth album, So Deep, represented their most daring work to date through its collaboration with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra. After contributing to composer Christian Balvig’s score for the 2020 series Cry Wolf, When Saints Go Machine offered the more introspective Emotional in 2021, an album shaped by pandemic-era reflections on dependency and addiction. Rosy reentered the Danish Top 20 in 2023, ending the band’s decade-long chart drought.
