Originating in Copenhagen, Denmark, the indie-rock quartet Communions specializes in an evocative sound rooted in the 1980s. In 2014, siblings Martin Rehof, who handles vocals and guitar, and Mads Rehof on bass joined forces with their former high-school classmates Jacob van Deurs Formann on guitar and Frederik Lind Köppen on drums. As the members matured, they recognized overlapping passions for music and broader artistic pursuits, prompting them to begin regular jam sessions at the Mayhem rehearsal facility in their hometown. Although that venue hosted numerous figures central to Copenhagen’s industrial and synth-driven circles, the group carved out its own approach by blending post-punk and new-wave textures from the eighties with luminous indie-pop and rock anthems stretching from the nineties onward. Following sustained rehearsals and composition, the band entered the studio and emerged with four tracks that became its first release, the Cobblestones 7", issued by the Danish independent label Posh Isolation. Momentum from that record prompted further sessions, yielding the single So Long Sun/Love Stands Still together with the Communions EP, both issued by London’s Tough Love Records. Critics increasingly praised the group’s celestial, hook-laden guitar lines, pop-infused vocal melodies, and candid, bittersweet songs exploring youth and romance, positioning Communions as a nostalgic yet contemporary act that celebrates earlier movements while remaining embedded in the present cultural moment. The quartet’s profile rose through modest European tours that introduced its music to larger audiences and simultaneously supported writing for a debut album. This distinctive style, combined with persistent touring, attracted the interest of the American label Fat Possum Records, which offered the band a recording contract. Its first full-length, Blue, appeared in February 2017.
