During the 1960s, Sílvia Lília Barrie Knapp, known professionally as Lílian, achieved widespread acclaim within the Jovem Guarda movement as one half of the romantic duo Leno e Lilian. Their partnership produced chart successes including “Pobre Menina” (Russel, adapted by Leno), “Eu Não Sabia que Você Existia” (Renato Barros/Tony), and “Devolva-me” (Lílian/Renato Barros), the last of which Eliana Printes revived to strong effect in 2001.

Following the duo’s breakup in 1968, Lílian continued as a solo performer and songwriter. Her 1975 single “Como Se Fosse Meu Irmão” appeared on the soundtrack of the film Pixote and moved 500,000 units. In 1979 she released a Paulo Coelho adaptation of “Sou Rebelde,” originally “Soy Rebelde” by M. Alejandro, which reached one million copies sold; the following year “Uma Música Lenta” (Ed Wilson/Robert Livi) added another 850,000 sales. At the height of her visibility she headlined throughout Brazil and also appeared in Argentina, Colombia, and Chile.

Her catalog has since been interpreted by Sandy e Júnior, Sandra de Sá, Zezé di Camargo e Luciano, and José Augusto.
