Biography
Lily Konigsberg gained notice as one member of the lo-fi noise-rock outfit Palberta, though her solo output has traced a path from mid-2010s noise explorations to the cleaner, bittersweet indie-pop style that defined her 2020 EP It's Just Like All the Clouds. That Wharf Cat Records release marked her first solo effort for the label. Ahead of her proper full-length debut, she issued the song-oriented compilation The Best of Lily Konigsberg Right Now, then delivered Lily We Need to Talk Now in 2021.
A self-described lifelong musician and songwriter, Konigsberg began performing solo café gigs in her hometown of Park Slope, Brooklyn, while still a teenager. During her time as a Bard College student in 2013 she joined classmates Nina Ryser and Ani Ivry-Block to launch Palberta. The trio soon drew label interest while touring D.I.Y. spaces behind the self-released My Pal Berta; OSR Tapes later put out My Pal Berta and Shitheads in the Ditch on cassette in 2014, and Feeding Tube Records followed with vinyl editions plus the split EP Special Worship alongside (New England) Patriots.
Konigsberg simultaneously developed solo projects, beginning with the seven-track improvisational set I can't stop feeling so good in October 2014. A split album with Ulysses of Hellier Ulysses surfaced on Datura Sound late the following year; Datura also issued Palberta’s Live on the Spot tape, captured at Brooklyn’s Silent Barn, while JMC Aggregate released the Palberta cassette Hot on the Beach, later reissued on vinyl by Feeding Tube. Underdog Pop Records added the split Chips for Dinner with No One and the Somebodies. Solo again, she offered the brief keyboard-pop collection kawai that claps in mid-2016.
Wider attention arrived once Wharf Cat Records released Palberta’s ambitious full-length Bye Bye Berta in early 2017; the band appeared on Rolling Stone’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know” list that month, and Wharf Cat later pressed Chips for Dinner on vinyl. That August Konigsberg issued her first official EP, the split Good Time Now with Andrea Schiavelli. Another EP, 4 picture tear, arrived in 2018, followed by Palberta’s sprawling art-punk statement Roach Goin’ Down; the group also supported the reunited Bikini Kill on the road in 2019.
Alongside her solo work and Palberta commitments, Konigsberg played with Eyes of Love alongside Schiavelli and formed the duo Lily and Horn Horse with Matt Norman. She returned in 2020 with her debut Wharf Cat solo EP, the Paco Cathcart-produced It's Just Like All the Clouds, which favored coherent pop structures and clean full-band arrangements. Palberta resurfaced in January 2021 with their fifth album Palberta5000; four months later Wharf Cat issued the compilation The Best of Lily Konigsberg Right Now. Before year’s end the label released her first proper solo full-length, Lily We Need to Talk Now. Produced by Nate Amos, the collection of concise indie-pop tracks included contributions from Schiavelli, Ryser, Norman, and Cathcart.
