Hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, the funeral-oriented doom metal four-piece Loss channels a sluggish strain of black metal steeped in sorrow, drawing explicit inspiration from the quoted litany of "depression, anxiety, failure, illness, disease, despair, pain, and fear." The group coalesced in 2003 with vocalist/guitarist Mike Meacham, drummer Jay LeMaire, guitarist Tim Lewis, and bassist John Anderson at its core, issuing its first full-length statement, Life Without Hope...Death Without Reason, through Deathgasm Records in 2005. That same year brought a split 12" LP alongside German metallers Necros Christos and a highly restricted split 7" shared with the French/German outfit Worship. In 2008 the split-EP Four Burials appeared, featuring Mournful Congregation, Otesanek, and Orthodox, while the Profound Lore label delivered the subsequent full-length Despond in 2011. The 2014 split LP A View from the Rope paired the band with Finnish death metal troupe Hooded Menace, and another Profound Lore full-length, Horizonless, surfaced in 2017.
