Biography
Born in Germany to a Sicilian mother and Ugandan father, Lou Bega—real name David Loubega—embodies the same hybrid character as the Afro-Cuban and mambo sounds that fuel his work. Singing and dancing filled his childhood, while R&B and reggae dominated his teenage years, which also included time in a rap group. A visit to Miami at age 18, however, introduced him to the repertoire of the mambo kings from the 1930s and 1940s. Captivated by the genre’s sonic energy and sharp visual style, he went back to Germany and began shaping his personal interpretation.
That effort produced the single “Mambo No. 5,” a lively reworking of Pérez Prado’s original. The track earned double-platinum certification in Germany during the summer of 1999 and quickly spread worldwide, topping charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and England. In the United States it climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Bega’s first full-length release, A Little Bit of Mambo, arrived later the same year and enjoyed comparable commercial results.
Follow-up projects such as Ladies & Gentlemen (2001), Lounatic (2006), and Free Again (2010) achieved far less market impact. Even so, Bega maintained a steady touring schedule. His fifth album, A Little Bit of 80s, contained renditions of Sade’s “Smooth Operator,” Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon,” and Dexys Midnight Runners’ “Come on Eileen.”
