Biography
From Melbourne, Australia, the four-piece Lowtide drew influence from the late-'80s U.K. shoegaze movement pioneered by My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride. The lineup, initially assembled in the mid-2000s as Three Month Sunset and comprising Gabriel Lewis on guitars, Lucy Buckeridge on bass and vocals, Anton Jakovljevic on drums, and Giles Simon on bass and vocals, had already established a reputation for dreamy, reverb-drenched shoegaze by the time the group adopted the Lowtide name in 2010. Their first EP, You Are My Good Light, appeared as a self-released effort in July 2010, followed the next year by the single Underneath Tonight.
After an extended recording period, Lowtide brought in Gareth Parton, known for his work with the Breeders and the Go! Team, to handle recording and production duties on their debut album. The self-titled LP surfaced in 2014 through Lost and Lonesome, after which the band toured Australia in support. The subsequent year saw the release of the single Julia, a cover of a song originally recorded by the obscure French coldwave group Asylum Party for its 1988 album Picture This. In 2016 the group entered a deal with the U.K. label Opposite Number, which handled a reissue of the debut album.
Recording for the follow-up began the next year at Aviary Studio in Abbotsford, Victoria, alongside Matt Hosking, the engineer who had worked on the Julia single. The first track to emerge, Alibi, arrived in August as the band launched its inaugural U.K. and European tour, now without Giles Simon, who had exited the lineup. Reduced to a trio, Lowtide issued its second album, Southern Mind, early in 2018 on Opposite Number in conjunction with the Sydney-based independent Rice Is Nice.
