Biography
Lukas Nelson carved his own path as an Americana wanderer, drawing from the legacy of his father Willie while exploring the fertile overlaps of rock and country traditions. His vocal style, marked by a reedy strength that echoed his dad’s, complemented his powerful guitar playing, which found full expression through his group Promise of the Real. The quintet gained widespread attention in the mid-2010s after Neil Young selected them as his regular backing ensemble. Young’s 2015 release The Monsanto Years elevated Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real to wider recognition, prompting the band to secure a deal with Fantasy and issue their self-titled album in 2017. That project entered Billboard’s Country Album charts at number two, yet the follow-up Turn Off the News (Build a Garden) in 2019 and A Few Stars Apart in 2021 confirmed that Nelson and Promise of the Real operated as contemporary free spirits equally at ease with country ballads, extended rock explorations, airy pop constructions, and gradually unfolding grooves. Nelson reinforced his country roots with the 2023 album Sticks and Stones.
Born in Austin, Texas and raised in Maui, Hawaii, Lukas Autry Nelson launched his performing life in the early 2000s by sharing stages with country music legend Willie Nelson. He took up guitar in childhood as a means of bridging the distance created by his father’s relentless touring schedule. At thirteen he became a member of Willie’s band, serving as rhythm guitarist and absorbing the performance techniques that later defined his independent work. Relocating to Los Angeles in 2007 to enroll at Loyola Marymount University, he encountered drummer Anthony LoGerfo, and together they established Promise of the Real the following year.
Resuming his role as an opener for his father, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real issued their self-released Brando’s Paradise Sessions EP in 2009, its cover artwork created by Lukas’s brother Micah Nelson. The band soon became Nelson’s central creative vehicle, producing full-length albums in 2010 and 2012. The group characterized its approach as “cowboy hippie surf rock,” a blend shaped in part by Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young. Even while developing his separate career, Lukas stayed deeply involved with Willie’s music, frequently opening shows before joining his father’s set, and the pair collaborated on the 2012 album Heroes, which included several vocal-and-guitar duets.
Lukas, Micah, and Promise of the Real next joined Neil Young for the 2015 album The Monsanto Years; afterward the band accompanied Young on tour. In 2016 Lukas and Promise of the Real returned to headlining their own dates in support of Something Real. The self-titled Fantasy release arrived in August 2017 and benefited from extensive promotion that secured its number-two placement on Billboard’s Country Album charts. Film work further increased their visibility in 2018: Promise of the Real appeared as themselves in the Daryl Hannah-directed Paradox, a Neil Young project that also featured their contributions to the soundtrack, and they served as Bradley Cooper’s backing group in his remake of A Star Is Born, whose songs included several co-written by Nelson and Lady Gaga. These milestones preceded the June 2019 arrival of Turn Off the News, Build a Garden, their first Concord album to reach the Billboard 200, where it peaked at 151. March 2020 brought Naked Garden, an assortment of alternate versions and outtakes from those sessions.
Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real delivered A Few Stars Apart in June 2021. Neil Young’s Noise and Flowers, documenting his 2019 European dates with the band, surfaced in summer 2022. Self-produced by the group, the 2023 album Sticks and Stones marked a return to their relaxed country-rock foundation.
