Los Angeles quartet Lunch Lady fuse the sounds of their colorful inspirations into a singular variety of arid, fleeting indie rock. The band established their presence through early performances on the concert circuit before issuing their signature recording, the debut album Angel.

Lunch Lady arose from the city’s lively underground D.I.Y. community when Juan Velasquez on lead guitar and Rachel Birke on vocals launched the project in 2017. With the later addition of bassist Victor Herrera and drummer Robert Wolfe, they promptly cut a first demo and began performing live, headlining their own shows while opening for acts ranging from Surf Curse to Orville Peck. By paring back their post-punk and indie rock roots, the group layered Birke’s understated vocals across persistent bass figures and buoyant guitar lines, yielding a singular, desert-inflected atmosphere. Early in 2019 they revealed plans for the debut LP Angel and issued the single “Window,” accompanied by an offbeat, story-focused video that traces a time traveler’s efforts to get back home. Pascal Stevenson produced the album, which appeared that August.
