Marc Houle travels globally to deliver live performances in the manner of countless techno artists, yet he stops short of labeling himself a DJ, given that every element stems directly from his own recorded material. Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, he regularly crossed into Detroit to witness the period many regard as the peak era of its underground techno warehouse events. The music quickly supplanted his earlier focus on drumming and the rock group he had joined, prompting him to accept a position at Richie Hawtin’s nearby venue, 13 Below. While working there he encountered fellow producer Magda, who began incorporating Houle’s tracks into her own sets. Those sets caught Hawtin’s attention, leading him to sign Houle to the Minus imprint and issue the debut album Restore in 2004. In 2006 Houle launched the Minus sub-label Items & Things, yet after relocating to Berlin in 2008 the imprint severed ties with its parent in 2011 and operated independently thanks to assistance from Magda and Troy Pierce. That same year saw Undercover appear as the label’s inaugural full-length release, while Houle also launched the Marc Houle Remix App for iOS.
