Mario Winans emerged as the Winans family member most prominent beyond gospel circles. Drawn to percussion instruments from a young age, he later mastered the piano as well. Right after finishing high school he launched a production career. Alongside contributions to multiple family projects, he accumulated credits with additional gospel acts such as Fred Hammond, the Anointed, and the Clark Sisters. Already respected as a drum programmer, percussionist, producer, and composer, he shifted fully into secular work by handling sessions for R. Kelly and Pebbles. Although he had not initially intended to perform as a solo artist, he signed with Motown and issued Story of My Heart in 1997. The release failed to connect commercially, as only “Don’t Know” reached the Top 50 on the R&B/hip-hop singles chart. He nevertheless maintained steady instrumental, programming, and production assignments, among them ongoing contributions to P. Diddy’s Bad Boy roster. That close relationship produced a fresh solo deal. In 2004 Winans delivered his second album, Hurt No More, marking his first project for Bad Boy. The lead single “I Don’t Wanna Know” surged in popularity soon after release and climbed into the Top Five on Billboard’s Hot 100.
