Possessing a lucid and composed vocal delivery along with an aptitude for crafting straightforward pop tunes within the girl group and noise pop vein, Martha Ffion launched her recording endeavors in 2014 via the EP Go. The Irish-born singer/songwriter, whose complete name is Claire Martha Ffion McKay, had engaged with instruments during her formative years yet only commenced composing tracks drawing from the alternative rock sounds of her adolescence, such as those from the early Strokes, after relocating to Glasgow. There, at age 18, she took up folk-pop performances, typically accompanied solely by acoustic guitar. Recording the EP Go marked a change, as she enlisted Poor Things for the project, resulting in three tracks of straightforward and sincere guitar pop. This led Ffion to commit fully to band performances thereafter. Consequently, her subsequent release, the 2015 double A-side single "No Applause"/"Lead Balloon" issued by Lost Map Records, showed no remaining folk-pop influences. Combined with her performances onstage, this prompted the Welsh indie label Turnstile to offer her a recording deal. Her initial output under that agreement came as the Trip EP in 2016. Following that, the majority of 2017 was dedicated to crafting her first full-length album alongside producer Jamie Savage and her performing ensemble at Chem 19 studio in Glasgow. Blending fresh noisy indie pop compositions with revisited takes on earlier singles, Sunday Best appeared in March 2018.
