Emerging from Chicago's thriving underground music community, Meat Wave stayed deeply involved in several concurrent projects that included Elephant Gun, Truman & His Trophy, and Pink Torpedo. The three members—Chris Sutter on guitar and vocals, Joe Gac on bass, and Ryan Wizniak on drums—came together in summer 2011 once Truman & His Trophy had ended, choosing a sharper, more forceful direction than their earlier work. They tracked their self-titled debut album in spring 2012; the record first surfaced on Bandcamp, followed later that year by a cassette edition on Let's Pretend Records. During 2013 the group played an extensive run of local and national concerts while developing songs for a follow-up, and this activity carried into 2014 when Hawthorne Street Records reissued the debut on vinyl. The remainder of 2014 brought continuous touring across the United States, after which the band traveled to the U.K. in early 2015. The Brother EP appeared that January on Bandcamp, with a vinyl pressing issued through Brace Yourself Records. Later in 2015 Meat Wave signed with Side One Dummy, which released their second full-length album, Delusion Moon, in September. Working again with Chicago production legend Steve Albini, the trio recorded the next album, The Incessant, which arrived in February 2017.
