Juno Award-winning Canadian trio the Dirty Nil deliver a thunderously intense blend of hard rock and punk driven by hoarse, raw vocals. Though they identify strictly as a "rock & roll band" rather than a punk group, years of touring earned them a place on the Warped Tour while they steadfastly upheld their principles. After extensive road experience, their first album, 2016's Higher Power, captured a raw yet powerful echo of their stage energy, whereas 2018's Master Volume brought greater polish without diminishing its bold attitude. Two years afterward they put out the punchy Fuck Art, which featured the wry and explosive single "Done with Drugs," and 2023's Free Rein to Passions returned to a stripped-down, elemental approach rooted in their earliest creative impulses.

Childhood friends Luke Bentham on guitar and vocals and Kyle Fisher on drums, steeped in proto-punk and classic rock, came of age in the quiet town of Dundas, Ontario—a suburb of Hamilton beside Lake Ontario close to the American border. They spent years making music together mainly for enjoyment and skill-building, yet the group only gained real traction once bassist Dave Nardi arrived in 2009 and they began performing in nearby Hamilton, where they quickly integrated into the city's tight-knit, active rock community.

Through relentless tours spanning the U.S. and Canada the band refined its style while maintaining a firm D.I.Y. approach and delaying any album release. Instead they issued a consistent flow of 7" singles, one of which reached NOFX frontman Fat Mike. Impressed, he proposed a deal on his Fat Wreck Chords imprint; the resulting 7", "Cinnamon," stirred surprise among followers accustomed to the label's typical skate-punk sound. The Dirty Nil later moved to Dine Alone for the 2016 arrival of Higher Power, an album that evoked various '90s touchstones from grunge, indie, and noise rock.

In 2017 the band released Minimum R&B, gathering earlier single and EP material, and earned a Juno Award for "Breakthrough Group of the Year." That same year Dave Nardi exited, with Ross Miller of Single Mothers stepping in on bass. The industrious trio returned in 2018 with Master Volume, tightening their execution while remaining devoted to their rock & roll outlook. They further sharpened their wordy garage-punk style on 2021's hard-hitting Fuck Art. Also in 2021 Ross Miller departed, and Dundas native Sam Tomlinson, previously associated with Captain Wildchild, joined as bassist.

November 2022 brought the single "Bye Bye Big Bear," followed six months later by the band's fourth album, Free Rein to Passions. This set revived the forceful, elemental drive of their initial recordings as the group applied its wit to topics such as the frustrations of employment in "Stupid Jobs," the rewards of personal growth in "Nicer Guy," and the thrill of pyrotechnics in "Blowing Up Things in the Woods."
