Biography
Mia Joy enriched her understated, warped guitar textures through added layers of keyboards and mallet percussion, unveiling her dreamy indie material on the 2021 full-length Spirit Tamer. That album contained a version of Arthur Russell's "Our Last Night Together."
Her mother recalls Mia Joy Rocha singing herself to sleep during infancy. She entered the Chicago Children's Choir while still young and later cited Grouper and Sade as key influences on her ethereal style. The EP Gemini Moon surfaced in 2017.
Spirit Tamer, her first album, was created alongside keyboardist Joseph Farago and percussionist Emerson Hunton. Michael Mac handled recording and mixing at Pallett Sound in Chicago, with co-production shared by Rocha, prior to its release on Fire Talk in mid-2021.
