Biography
Lo-fi psychedelic explorers Mmoss originated in New Hampshire, where guitarist Douglas Tuttle and multi-instrumentalist Rachel Neveu established the band after first crossing paths during their time as Boston residents. Tuttle began on a plastic guitar at age four before moving to a basic acoustic six-string two years later, whereas Neveu started flute lessons in grade school and later added keyboards to her instrumental palette. Following an unsuccessful year spent on a noisy indie rock endeavor in Boston, the pair entered a romantic relationship and moved to New Hampshire in late 2007. Seeking a fresh musical path, they formed a new outfit that blended pop, psychedelia, and improvisation; guitarist and bassist Justin Dearmitt, then employed at a record store, soon completed the lineup. The trio devoted multiple years to testing Tuttle’s home-recording setup and custom-built signal-processing devices, gradually capturing material on a four-track cassette recorder. Although drummers rotated frequently throughout the sessions, Tuttle, Neveu, and Dearmitt refined a broad sonic range while rehearsing in a converted woodshop, eventually compiling the results into the album i. Burger Records discovered and approved of i, issuing the record in early 2011. The independent debut drew strong notices from the indie press, prompting Rachel’s brother Aaron Neveu to join on drums; the expanded group then toured both alongside Aaron’s other band, Woods, and independently. Impressed by i, the Chicago indie imprint Trouble in Mind contacted Mmoss about a follow-up, resulting in the melodic yet ambitious Only Children, which surfaced in 2012.
