Biography
Although they carry a nominal association with the J-rock scene, Monoral pursue an alt-rock and grunge sound shaped by Muse and Pearl Jam rather than by reworking 1980s influences favored by many peers. The duo’s makeup explains this divergence: both members are half-Japanese and fully bilingual. Ali Morizumi, responsible for guitars and bass, was born to an American parent and raised in Tokyo. Anis Shimada, who sings and plays second guitar, was born in London to a Moroccan parent, spent his childhood in France, and became fluent in Japanese, English, French, and Arabic before returning to Japan. By 2000 the two had already established media careers—Shimada as a fashion model and session musician, Morizumi as a radio personality and national MTV VJ—when they met at the network and decided to form Monoral.
The band’s debut release, the EP In Stereo, appeared in 2001, yet Shimada and Morizumi continued to treat Monoral as a secondary project. They maintained television commitments and limited live appearances, often sharing bills with other acts. Their joint initiatives included launching an annual Halloween rock showcase and contributing to outside endeavors such as Bloom Underground, drummer Eric Zay’s side project, and English lyric translations for the 666 album by L’Arc-en-Ciel frontman Hyde.
Recognition arrived in 2004 when the second EP, Ammonite—recorded with Zay and singer-songwriter Rie Eto—reached number three on the Japanese indie chart and remained in the Top 50 for seven months. Capitalizing on that momentum, Monoral issued their first full-length album, Petrol, in 2005 and immediately left the independent circuit to join Haunted Recs, the label run by Hyde. Their debut single, Visions in My Head, followed six months after the album. Public attention surged in 2006 with the track “Kiri,” featured in the cyberpunk anime series Ergo Proxy alongside Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android.” The band handled digital distribution of the song themselves. In 2007 the label released the single Tuesday and the album Turbulence, while Monoral performed at the Fuji Rock Festival, Japan’s largest music event.
