Morgana Lefay stood among the scarce 1990s acts that upheld the thrash style largely forsaken by its originators. Their debut arrived via the self-released Symphony of the Damned in 1990, a recording that featured vocalist Charles Rytkonen alongside guitarists Tony Eriksson and Tommi Karppanen, drummer Jonas Sonderlind, and bassist Joakim Lundberg. The independent effort secured the group slots on the underground metal circuit, where growing visibility drew the notice of Black Mark Records. Over the ensuing decade they issued additional full-lengths, at one point replacing Karppanen and Lundberg with Daniel Persson and Joakim Heder. Mounting contractual disputes with the label ultimately prompted the musicians to dissolve the project in 1996. Three years later the ensemble resurfaced under the shortened name Lefay, sustaining activity for two more years before dissolving once again.
