Centered on vocalist and songwriter Luis Dubuc, the outfit known as Mystery Skulls blends electronic dance with neo-soul and echoes of vintage disco. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Dubuc spent his early years there before relocating with his family to Toronto at age eight, sparking a passion for dance music alongside hip-hop and metal. Once settled in Dallas, his drumming role in Thirty Called Arson preceded the launch of his electronic pop endeavor the Secret Handshake, an act whose album My Name Up in Lights from 2009 climbed to the seventh spot on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. Shifting focus in 2011, Dubuc dissolved the Secret Handshake in favor of Mystery Skulls, a name drawn from a Nickelodeon Are You Afraid of the Dark? installment, and that same period saw his relocation to Los Angeles along with the arrival of a debut EP under the new moniker, self-titled and highlighting the track "Amazing." Warner Bros. came aboard as label in 2013, paving the way for work with Chic's Nile Rodgers that shaped the full-length Forever, issued in 2014. The year 2017 marked his comeback via the single "Music," serving as an initial preview of the follow-up album One of Us.
