Nana Grizol emerged as an indie pop outfit from Athens, Georgia, whose singular character fuses the casually unhurried textures of Pavement-style slacker acts with the skewed yet inviting psychedelic pop associated with the Elephant 6 collective, all refracted through the songwriting lens of frontman Theo Hilton. His compositions weave a queer perspective into narratives rooted in Southern American experience, rendering personal accounts that shift between lighthearted and reflective tones while addressing both delight and indignation; the addition of an expanded, horn-augmented lineup heightens the theatricality and timbral range of the arrangements. The group first unveiled its economical yet vivid approach on the 2008 release Love It Love It, then demonstrated greater assurance and dynamic range with 2017’s Ursa Minor before returning to unscripted, folk-inflected punk on 2019’s Theo Zumm.

Hilton established Nana Grizol in 2007, drawing on the local music scene that had aided his navigation of outsider status within a predominantly straight environment. He channeled emotions and uncertainties into songwriting, gathered the initial lineup, and launched the ensemble on a nationwide circuit of D.I.Y. venues. After the tour concluded, Hilton joined forces with Madeline Adams (vocals and bass), Jared Gandy (bass and guitar), Laura Carter (drums, trumpet, and clarinet), Matte Cathcart (drums), Patrick Jennings (keyboards), Margaret Child (percussion), Kate Mitchell (trumpet), and Ian Rickert (clarinet and harmonica) to record the debut album Love It Love It, issued in 2008. When the second album Ruth appeared in 2010, Child, Mitchell, and Rickert had departed, and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Cucchiaro joined to handle guitar, trumpet, baritone sax, and euphonium. Hilton subsequently relocated from Athens, living briefly in Seattle and New York before establishing residence in New Orleans, where he began preparing material for the next Nana Grizol project. The ensemble’s studio polish reached a new peak on Ursa Minor in 2017, whereas Theo Zumm in 2019 salvaged material from earlier sessions and captured the band in its rawest, most stripped-down form, short of maximum volume. Hilton and his colleagues then surpassed the refined sound of Ursa Minor with the 2020 concept album South Somewhere Else, which drew inspiration from his upbringing in Athens.
