Biography
London-based Nedry weave ominous low-end pulses and fragmented electronic rhythms drawn from dubstep together with delicate guitar textures and vocals that evoke the atmospheric sensibilities of Björk alongside the Cocteau Twins. The band’s moniker nods to the disloyal systems engineer from Jurassic Park, and its first incarnation took shape in 2007 when multi-instrumentalist/programmers Matt Parker and Chris Amblin joined forces with vocalist Ayu Okakita through remote online collaboration. By the start of 2008 the three musicians began convening in person to ready themselves for stage appearances, yet Okakita briefly stepped away to revisit her homeland of Japan. Parker and Amblin kept the project moving forward as a duo, sharpening their approach through joint performances until Okakita rejoined in early 2009, at which point the lineup resumed full activity as a three-piece. They soon shared bills with Pivot, Maps, and Daedelus, self-issued the SZ EP during that summer, and followed it months afterward with the mini-album Condors via Off the Shelf Records. Growing recognition—bolstered by support and broadcasts on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, and XFM—prompted a deal with Monotreme Records, which brought Condors back into circulation in 2010. Over the ensuing two years the trio toured extensively alongside Pivot, Daedelus, and These New Puritans while preparing In a Dim Light, an album whose brooding tone drew from the atmospheric visions of David Lynch and T.S. Eliot and which appeared in March 2012.
