Originating from Omaha, Nebraska, indie rock outfit Neva Dinova cultivated a dedicated audience in the mid-2000s through their atmospheric, minimalist, and introspective material. The group issued two albums on the Crank! imprint before moving to Saddle Creek for the 2005 release You May Already Be Dreaming. Following a 2009 breakup, they maintained a low profile with occasional reissues and archival projects until reconvening to produce their fourth studio album, Canary, in 2024.

The band, whose name honors frontman Jake Bellows’ grandmother, emerged from the same fertile Omaha milieu that also spawned the Faint, Cursive, and Bright Eyes. Their formation in 1993 actually predated those acts, although their own debut full-length did not appear until 2002. Initially a partnership between singer/guitarist Jake Bellows and bassist Heath Koontz, Neva Dinova developed a distinctive strain of spacious, personal indie rock that earned critical regard even if it never matched the commercial reach of their Omaha contemporaries. After aligning with Crank! Records, they completed their self-titled debut in 2002 and, two years later, the split EP One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels alongside Bright Eyes. Their next album, The Hate Yourself Change, followed in 2005.

Deeply embedded in Omaha’s close-knit community, Bellows contributed to Bright Eyes’ 2007 album Cassadaga—Conor Oberst having earlier played drums in an earlier version of Neva Dinova—and the group itself signed with Saddle Creek in 2008, issuing its third long-player, You May Already Be Dreaming, that spring.

Though the band dissolved in 2009, Saddle Creek has continued to re-release its catalog, including the debut album and an expanded edition of the One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels EP. Bellows maintained ties to the label, issuing the solo album New Ocean in 2013. A one-off reunion show occurred in 2014, yet a sustained return did not materialize until the early 2020s.

Saddle Creek issued the Neva Dinova compilation Demos & C-Sides in 2022, and the band delivered fresh material on the album Canary two years later.
