Nevermen formed as a three-person unit joining Anticon MC Doseone with Faith No More's Mike Patton and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. Their sound freely merges experimental hip-hop, indie rock, and electronic textures while relying on tightly wound vocal harmonies and cryptic, abstract lyrics, in the same vein as Doseone's earlier ventures 13 & God and Subtle. The members dismiss any notion of a single frontman, instead insisting that each participant contributes on equal footing so the voices fuse into one collective presence. Work on the project began near the end of 2008, building on prior overlaps that included Doseone's appearance on Patton's 2006 Peeping Tom album and Adebimpe's guest spot on Subtle's 2007 release. The three publicly confirmed their collaboration that same year, then revealed in 2009 both their chosen name and a new contract with Lex Records, the same imprint already home to Subtle. Numerous side obligations, most prominently Faith No More's reunion, pushed the first public material back until 2015, when the singles "Tough Towns" and "Mr. Mistake" surfaced, the latter featuring a Boards of Canada remix. Early the following year the group, now shortened from the Nevermen, issued its self-titled album on Lex in the U.K. and on Patton's Ipecac imprint in the U.S.
