Biography
Brooklyn native Nomi, born Nomi Ruiz, first attracted wide notice when her image appeared among the “NYC beauties” projected behind Antony’s Turning shows in 2004. Her solo career began the next year with the release of Lost in Lust, a downbeat electronic album built around songs and colored by the harder-edged textures of early-nineties hip-hop and R&B; Mobb Deep and Mary J. Blige are among the artists she has named as influences. After sharing bills with Debbie Harry and CocoRosie, she joined forces with Hercules and Love Affair, supplying several vocal tracks—including some that Antony also sang—for the ensemble’s self-titled 2008 album. A separate project, the trio Deep Red formed with Andrew Raposo and Morgan Wiley, issued the 12-inch single “Fun Girl” in March 2009.
