Obsidian

Numerous heavy metal outfits around the world have adopted the name Obsidian, yet the most prominent originates in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This lineup consists of vocalist Robbe Kok, guitarists Simon Lawford and Sjaak Kassies, bassist Gerben Van Der Bij, and drummer Melle Kramer, all delivering a highly technical brand of progressive death metal.

The group’s sole full-length releases to date, 2006’s Emerging and 2010’s Point of Infinity, invite comparisons with Sweden’s Meshuggah, France’s Gojira, and fellow Dutch band Textures. Both albums emerged after prolonged rehearsal periods and a string of demo recordings. Although they received strong critical notice, the records have not yet connected with a larger listenership.
