Biography

Ronald Coleman, recognized professionally as OG Ron C, would rank among rap’s central figures through his work as a DJ, label operator, and manager even without the vast catalog of releases that extend the screwed-and-chopped template first developed by DJ Screw. He launched his career spinning records at high school parties and soon afterward secured shifts at both college and commercial radio outlets. In the late ’90s he partnered with Michael “5000” Watts to launch the Swishahouse imprint, issuing their signature slow, hallucinatory remixes while helping advance the careers of Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire. Coleman later exited Swishahouse yet established new platforms such as Wrecking Yard and kept releasing large quantities of tapes, among them additional volumes in the long-running, R&B-oriented F-Action series. He has also reworked tracks by acts spanning the Geto Boys and UGK to Riff Raff and dozens more. With DJ Candlestick he further broadened his palette by delivering “chop not slop” treatments of Little Dragon’s Nabuma Rubberband (Nabuma Purple Rubberband) and Thundercat’s Drunk (Drank).
