Biography
Founded in New York by Shane Butler of Quilt, Olden Yolk produces pastoral, psychedelic folk-rock distinguished by a distinctly haunted, sepia-tinted atmosphere. The undertaking had grown into a full band fronted jointly by Butler and co-singer/songwriter Caity Shaffer by the arrival of its debut album, the self-titled Olden Yolk issued in 2018.
Butler first outlined the group’s refreshed approach to 1960s folk-rock inspirations in 2012 by issuing solo material under the Olden Yolk name. Following a 2014 split 7" with Weyes Blood, he later aligned with singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Caity Shaffer. The pair first crossed paths in 2016 and launched their collaboration through an exchange of poems. Captured alongside touring musicians guitarist Jesse DeFrancesco and drummer Dan Drohan (Uni Ika Ai), the project’s opening full-length appeared on Trouble in Mind Records in 2018. Its stylistic counterpart Living Theatre followed on the same label the next year, featuring contributions from Jarvis Taveniere (Woods), Frank Maston (Maston), Eliza Bagg (Pavo Pavo), and percussionist Booker Stardrum (Landlady).
