Led by Norwegian singer/songwriter Nora Schjelderup, the multinational avant-pop outfit Ora the Molecule merges polished synthwave textures with exuberant, melody-driven compositions. Releases such as the 2021 album Human Safari showcase the ensemble’s wide-eyed yet precisely detailed songs, which remain rooted in dance-floor energy while echoing the legacies of Cocteau Twins, Fleetwood Mac, and Kraftwerk.

Schjelderup, born in Norway, passed her early years across Spain, Italy, and her native country. The family’s repeated relocations repeatedly positioned her as the newcomer at each school, sharpening her talent for close observation. She started composing at age eight; at eighteen she was already appearing in Oslo with a marimba trio alongside two peers. A visit to her biological father in Los Angeles introduced her to both his Guatemalan background and broader American influences. Captivated by these elements, she stayed on, enrolling in journalism studies, taking work as a driver, and channeling family stories into new material.

During this period she met German keyboardist Jan Blumentrath; together they performed and founded the label Uhh Ahh Records. She also encountered Slovakian hat maker Sju Smatanova, who had traveled to the United States to present her designs. On impulse, Smatanova agreed to join the project on drums and purchased her first kit after returning to London. Several years later the three musicians relocated to a remote Spanish village to concentrate on Ora the Molecule. The Sugar EP appeared as a self-release in 2019, followed by the single “Loose Rock” in 2020. The group’s first full-length album, Human Safari, was issued by Mute in July 2021.
