Biography
In São Paulo the vocal-instrumental pop duo came together in 1985 when André Abujamra, who supplied vocals, guitar, keyboards, and drum machines, teamed with Maurício Pereira on vocals and saxophone. Their recordings parodied techno pop through an eclectic mix of styles. The two musicians had first crossed paths the previous year while enrolled in an African percussion course. Audiences drawn to the pair’s high-energy, comedic live sets built a devoted following that soon conferred cult status. Among their notable tracks were the “Yellow Submarine” adaptation “Sub,” plus “John” and “Monstros Japoneses.” The debut album Música e Ciência appeared in 1988; it fused punk rock and bossa nova with other genres and included a 35-second version of Tom Jobim’s “Samba do Avião.” The 1990 follow-up Música Serve Para Isso presented a more conventional framework while preserving the irreverent stance. The duo disbanded in 1991, after which Abujamra extended his world-music parodies in the band Karnak.
