Pablo Casals

Casals began his training at the Barcelona Municipal Music School, where his early experiments with unconventional bowing and fingering quickly revealed exceptional technical promise. He continued his studies at the Madrid Conservatory under Bretón. His first major international appearance came in 1899, when he performed at a concert for Queen Victoria. Throughout his life he sought to express both truth and beauty through his playing, approaching the instrument with unadorned mastery while producing a luminous tone and delivering interpretations marked by intellectual depth. Beyond his extensive concert tours, he established the Ecole Normale in Paris and created the Orquesta Pau Casals in Barcelona, serving as its conductor as well. When civil war erupted in Spain, the Franco regime issued a death threat against him, drawing him deeper into political engagement. During the Second World War he presented numerous recitals to aid the Red Cross and displaced Catalan refugees. In protest he refused to appear in Hitler’s Germany or Mussolini’s Italy. From 1946 onward he voluntarily withdrew from public performance to demonstrate his opposition to the Franco government. He ended this silence in 1950 yet persisted in promoting peace through his music. An inspiring educator, Casals also wrote numerous compositions, the majority of which have never been published.
