Paktofonika emerged in 1998 as a Polish hip-hop trio based in Katowice, assembled by Magik (Piotr Łuszcz) after his departure from Kaliber 44, Rahim (Sebastian Salbert) following his exit from 3xKlan, and Fokus (Wojtek Alszer). Their recordings blended ragga, funk, and jazz textures while centering introspective accounts of personal hardship that ultimately conveyed resilience and optimism. Turntablist DJ Bambus and beatboxer Sot completed the lineup. The collective secured a deal with Gigant Records during spring 2000 and issued its first album, Kinematografia, late that same year. The project reached number two on the Polish album chart and earned gold certification. Eight days after its release, Magik took his own life. The remaining members persisted with live shows that incorporated archived vocal tracks from Magik. Their second and last studio album, Archiwum Kinematografii, appeared in 2002 and gathered leftover material from the debut sessions alongside fresh tracks cut without him. The group’s final performance occurred in March 2003; that concert was later issued on DVD under the title Pożegnalny Koncert in April 2004. Rahim, Fokus, and DJ Bambus subsequently formed Pokahontaz. In 2012 the biographical film Jesteś Bogiem chronicled the group’s trajectory, becoming Poland’s highest-grossing release of the year, collecting multiple awards, and yielding a gold-certified soundtrack.
