Emerging from Hamburg as a German post-punk and electronic-pop ensemble, Palais Schaumburg later earned recognition as the formative platform for several noted underground figures, among them Holger Hiller, Thomas Fehlmann, F.M. Einheit, and Mortiz von Oswald. The group made its first appearance in 1981 via the six-song EP Das Single Kabinett on ZickZack. Its self-titled debut full-length followed in 1982 on Kamera. Hiller soon left to launch a solo career. The remaining members moved directly into recording the LP Lupa, which Phonogram’s German branch released later that year; the album introduced horns and a mild jazz fusion dimension to the sound. Their third and final album, Parlez-Vouz Schaumburg?, appeared in 1984 on Phonogram and incorporated Latin rhythms with big band accents.
