In the Detroit underground, Freddie Beauragard—better known as Paradime—labored steadily within the city’s emerging hip-hop community across the full span of the 1990s. When Eminem, performing as Slim Shady, achieved massive national breakthrough between 1999 and 2000, industry attention turned toward the Motor City, suddenly viewed as rap’s newest fertile ground. Paradime drew direct advantage from that shift; his debut album Paragraphs, issued in 1999, earned strong regional support throughout the Midwest as well as regular airplay on underground college stations nationwide. The skilled lyricist soon attracted the interest of fellow Detroit success story Kid Rock, another figure who had recently risen to wealth, resulting in a 2000 signing to Kid Rock’s Top Dog imprint. ~ Michael Di Bella
