Los Angeles electronic artist and DJ Peekaboo, whose real name is Matthew Lucas, crafts bold, lighthearted dubstep productions that blend jungle, rave, trance, trap, and additional genres. His sound is frequently labeled space bass or free-form bass. After issuing his debut track in 2016, he joined forces with Bassnectar and delivered remixes for Deadmau5, Zeds Dead, and additional acts. The 2018 single “Babatunde,” which he co-produced with Detroit’s G-Rex, resonated widely across the EDM scene, while the two 2019 EPs Impossible and Wrecking Ball both landed inside the Top Ten of Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart.

Born and raised in Michigan, Matthew Lucas grew up with a father who performed trumpet in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He himself took up trumpet and guitar before discovering electronic music during high school. He experimented with several production styles before narrowing his focus to dubstep and attended Western Michigan University with plans to become a sound engineer for horror films. His first EP, Revenge, arrived in 2017, after which he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue music full-time. Once Bassnectar began featuring the Revenge cut “Wobbly” in his festival performances, momentum for Peekaboo’s work surged, leading the pair to record “Disrupt the System” featuring Azeem. Liquid Stranger’s Wakaan imprint put out the 2018 EPs Imposters and Maniac along with the G-Rex collaboration “Babatunde,” which received endorsements from numerous EDM DJs and outlets.

Beyond extensive U.S. tours alongside Ganja White Night and Rezz, Peekaboo headlined multiple sold-out shows. His first release on Zeds Dead’s Deadbeats label, the EP Wrecking Ball, surfaced in March 2019 and entered Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart at number ten. Impossible followed later that year and climbed even higher, peaking at number four on the same tally. Wakaan issued his initial two EPs together as a limited-edition LP in early 2020, and the ISOxo-produced track “Powermove” appeared that March.
