Brighton, England indie folk duo Peggy Sue originated when longtime friends Rosa Slade and Katy Young decided to collaborate. Their signature blend of brooding anti-folk and fiery indie pop first took shape across basements, living rooms, and small clubs during 2006. A successful tour alongside like-minded British indie rockers Mumford & Sons brought the group wider notice beyond their immediate surroundings and secured recording contracts with Yep Roc in the States and Wichita Records in the U.K. Peggy Sue issued their debut album, Fossils and Other Phantoms, in June 2010, followed by Acrobats the next year. Widely praised, the sophomore effort moved beyond the slightly twee folk sound of the first record by incorporating electric guitars and moody, indie rock-influenced melodies strengthened by drummer Olly Joyce. Late in 2011 the trio appeared at a temporary cinema in Hackney, London, delivering an interpretation of the rock & roll soundtrack to the cult film Scorpio Rising. They entered the studio with Jimmy Robertson to capture those versions, which surfaced on a limited-edition run of LPs in 2012. The group deliberately paced the creation of their third studio release before reuniting with Robertson in 2013 to track Choir of Echoes, issued in January 2014. Not long after its release they entered an extended hiatus, resurfacing in late 2019 with the singles “Motorcade” and “Validate Me,” both included on their fourth studio album, Vices.
