Plena Libre

Bassist Gary Nunez launched Plena Libre in 1994, restoring the plena genre—rooted in Puerto Rican folklore—that had languished in neglect after only brief popularity during the 1950s and early 1960s. Modern dance rhythms alone proved sufficient to restore its visibility, enabling the ensemble to record its debut album Juntos Y Revueltos on a minimal budget and immediately capture widespread attention across the island. Later releases featured a self-titled 1998 set that served as Plena Libre’s initial entry into the global marketplace, followed in 2000 by Mas Libre.
