Next generation Nuyorrican salsa singer Michael Stuart entered the world on January 5, 1975, in New York City, the son of Puerto Rican parents who had relocated there during the 1960s. His childhood unfolded across extended stays in both New York and Puerto Rico. Early musical exposure came through his uncle, bandleader Israel “Timbalero” Stuart, as well as his father’s deep affinity for the art form. Informal sessions at home with these mentors acquainted him with the percussion and melodic foundations that would define contemporary salsa. Although the rock and R&B sounds of New York streets also appealed to him, his formative listening centered on Ismael Rivera, Héctor Lavoe, and Andy Montañez. Lacking formal instruction, he nevertheless secured a position singing coro for established Puerto Rican bandleader Wichy Camacho at age twenty. Connections made through Camacho led to further opportunities alongside Johnny Rivera and Marc Anthony. Increasing professional exposure soon prompted thoughts of cutting a demo and pursuing an independent path. The resulting track “Tu y Yo” attracted interest from several prominent salsa imprints, among them RMM, which ultimately signed the emerging vocalist. His first album, Cuentos de la Vecindad, achieved notable commercial success and earned him the Tu Musica Award for Best New Artist in 1997. The subsequent release Retratos likewise drew favorable critical response. Among later milestones, his fifth album, Sin Miedo, received a 2005 Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Tropical-Contemporary Album category, while Billboard Music Award nominations followed in 2006 and 2007. After years with RMM, Stuart moved to Universal’s Machete Music imprint for the 2006 project Back to Da Barrio and the 2007 follow-up Sentimiento de un Rumbero.
