Nervous Records assembled the Polyrhythm Addicts after the quartet’s initial single succeeded, creating a short-lived unit that brought together several skilled New York City rappers on one project. Mr. Complex had originally crafted the track “Not Your Ordinary,” enlisting producer DJ Spinna along with MCs Shabaam Sahdeeq and Apani B Fly Emcee; the four then issued the song under the Polyrhythm Addicts name, where it found strong favor within New York City’s underground rap community. Impressed by that reception, Nervous commissioned a complete album from the group. Recorded during the spring of 1999, the resulting effort showcased an inspired partnership in which DJ Spinna’s old-school beats complemented the distinct styles of his three collaborators. The members had never planned to promote the project, yet once Nervous arranged live dates after the album’s 2000 release, the Polyrhythm Addicts disbanded.
