Rap duo Potluck possesses an intimate grasp of hip-hop's longstanding ties to cannabis, owing to their home in Humboldt County, CA, a global center for marijuana cultivation. The pair—1 Ton, whose given name is James Kerri, and UnderRated, born Josh Leiderman—craft records that evoke two locals wandering their surroundings while trading rhymes on women, sports, hip-hop, and Humboldt's signature herb. Originally from San Diego, Kerri connected with Leiderman, a lifelong Humboldt resident, when both claimed victory in the same 1995 DJ competition held in that northern California region. UnderRated oversees the bulk of the beats as the duo blends underground material with more radio-friendly, mainstream-leaning tracks, all while remaining anchored in West Coast traditions; this regional loyalty surfaces through partnerships with E-40, Mystik Journeymen, the Luniz, and prolific Cali producer Bosko. The first two projects, Humboldt County High in 2001 and Harvest Time in 2004, appeared on Lost Koast Productions, the imprint Kerri and Leiderman launched alongside musician and co-producer Jefferey Simmons, Jr. Their 2006 release, Straight Outta Humboldt, emerged via a joint arrangement with Suburban Noize and earned wider national exposure than anything the group had issued previously.
