Biography
Emerging from Tokyo as a six-piece ska-punk ensemble fueled by fiery energy, Potshot projected vocals in English that remained largely indecipherable, while their prominent brass-driven ska horns seemed to hail from an alien sphere. Distinctive overall, the sound nevertheless recalled the work of Screeching Weasel, Operation Ivy, and Bad Manners. The group’s expansive pop approach proved irresistibly catchy, weaving “oohs” and “ahhs” into the familiar ska exclamation “Oi-Oi-Oi!” California-based Asian Man Records issued the debut full-length Pots and Shots in 1997 and followed two years later with Rock ’n’ Roll. Til I Die had already stirred audiences across Japan for more than a year before its American release arrived in October 2000. A Go Go surfaced in 2002, the same year Dance to the Potshot Record first appeared in Japan; that album reached U.S. listeners in 2004, augmented by two additional bonus tracks. On TV Freak Records, the band delivered its final album, Potshot Beat Goes On, in Japan during May 2005. They disbanded later that year after a closing performance in Tokyo in September.
