Forming the group Prelude, Brian Hume handled vocals and guitar alongside his spouse Irene on vocals, with Ian Vardy contributing guitars and vocals to complete the England-based threesome. Their sound occupied a space between Peter, Paul & Mary and Crosby, Stills & Nash, delivering harmonies that matched the latter in sweetness and quiet elegance. The ensemble gained popularity across England's folk venues, launching their discography in 1973 via the Dawn Records album How Long Is Forever, which sustained activity through the decade's close, though Back Into the Light on Pye represented their final widely circulated release mid-decade. A cover of Neil Young's After the Gold Rush reached the British Top 30 and American Top 40, prompting a United States tour during the mid-1970s, a period that also saw recordings for Island. Upon Vardy's departure in the 1980s, the lineup shrank to a duo temporarily before reverting to three members, yet the Humes resumed as a pair by the late 1980s into the early 1990s.
