Emerging from Perth's indie underground with a potent blend of expansive, inquisitive psych-pop, prog-rock, and intense garage riffs, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets cultivated a loyal following via relentless live performances and early recordings such as the 2016 release High Visceral, Pt. 1 alongside the tougher 2019 effort And Now for the Whatchamacallit. The quartet's fourth album, the ARIA-nominated Shyga! The Sunlight Mound, surfaced in 2021 and was swiftly succeeded by Night Gnomes the following year.

The group originated in 2014 from the individual projects of singer/guitarist Jack McEwan. Operating inside a former horse barn on the outskirts of Leederville, McEwan joined forces with guitarist Luke Parish, bassist Luke Reynolds, and drummer Danny Caddy to channel their shared creativity through extended overnight improvisations that shaped the material refined for High Visceral, Pt. 1. Its follow-up, High Visceral, Pt. 2, arrived twelve months afterward and reinforced the ensemble's merger of blues-inflected guitar lines with exploratory yet tuneful rock structures. Bolstered by global roadwork, the Crumpets adopted a more aggressive stance for And Now for the Whatchamacallit, which also contained some of their most elaborately composed psych-pop pieces. Following an extensive Australian headline run, the band channeled its energies into the studio for the comparably inventive Shyga! The Sunlight Mound, earning an ARIA Award nod in the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category. Announced by the thunderous Black Sabbath-inspired guitar work on the opening track "Lava Lamp Pisco," the industrious outfit delivered its fifth full-length, Night Gnomes, during April 2022.
