Biography
Public Memory represents the solo venture of Robert Toher, who investigates loss, dreams, and nostalgia through spectral blends of dub, Krautrock, and trip-hop. On 2016's Wuthering Drum, Toher relied chiefly on his ethereal vocals, a minimal selection of synthesizers, guitar, and field recordings to shape dreamlike pieces that appeared ready to fade yet produced enduring resonance. Within this core aesthetic, later projects displayed fresh dimensions, including the crisp melodies and rapid tempo shifts of 2018's Demolition and the marginally brighter yet persistently brooding character of 2023's Elegiac Beat, which signaled the project's increasing maturity.
Toher spent much of the 1990s performing in punk groups before gaining traction with the post-rock band Apse, whose releases included 2006's Spirit and 2009's Climb Up prior to the group's 2011 breakup. He subsequently formed ERAAS with former Apse member Austin Stawiarz, introducing pulsing electronics to their established atmospheric framework on the self-titled 2012 debut and 2013's Initiation before that project concluded.
Following the close of a relationship, Toher relocated to Los Angeles and began developing tracks that became Public Memory's debut. Felte Records issued Wuthering Drum in March 2016, limiting the setup to a Korg MS-20 Mini, guitar, and field recordings. The Veil of Counsel EP arrived the following year with a more transparent production that informed the November 2018 album Demolition. During the same year, Toher assembled a sound pack for Elektron, an assignment that deepened his synthesizer work and prompted greater streamlining on Ripped Apparition, which Felte released in November 2020. The 2022 singles "Clocktower" and "Christmas Night" led into Public Memory's fourth album, September 2023's Elegiac Beat, where Toher's haunting productions met more immediate songwriting alongside added traces of jazz and funk within the project's layered textures.
