Biography
Around 1997, Toronto musician John Crossingham launched Raising the Fawn as a subdued, reflective solo endeavor while employed in the group ThanatoPop. The project later expanded to live performances and recordings, evolving into a complete ensemble through collaborations with friends and culminating in the independent release of a self-titled album in 2001. Work then began on The North Sea, yet once tracking concluded the remaining members departed, stranding Crossingham and bassist/vocalist Scott Remila with an unfinished effort. Crossingham turned his attention to Broken Social Scene, placing Raising the Fawn on another pause. Reunion with Remila and addition of drummer Dylan Green produced the By the Warmth of Your Flame EP, issued in January 2004 under a fresh arrangement with Sonic Unyon. The recording carried a somewhat enclosed, predominantly muted character well suited to the Canadian winter. Sonic Unyon also confirmed plans to issue North Sea the following early spring.
